I must confess that I initially struggled with the idea that what I was eating could be affecting my behavior; after all I had ADHD and didn’t out grow it as adult.

For the longest time, I didn’t realize that many of the foods I craved and caffeine drinks I consumed was an attempt to self medicate my condition.  Why do our bodies crave certain foods that are addictive and have such adverse effects on our overall health, including our behavior?

Well, once we understand the cause if ADHD, then we are able to see the connection between the condition and certain foods we crave and that impact our overall mood and sense of mental stability.  ADHD is due to chemical imbalances in the brain caused by slow brain waves, neurotransmitter deviancies.

So, the ADHD mind needs a boost to get motivated and that’s where caffeine and cokes as well as sweet foods and simple carbs come in.

The problem is these additive foods that provide a temporary boost come with a crash and thus a very moody or cranky child.  These foods provide a temporary high that provides focus and a period of optimal attention and concentration, problem is they reak havoc on your bodies health  and always are followed by irritable and aggressive behaviors.

There is a better way to address the issue and that lies in an understanding of what your body is actually craving.  The ADHD mind lacks the ability to produce Dopamine and thus creates an imbalance that causes many of the ADHD symptoms.

So, changing your menu could in fact change your child’s manners by offering their brains foods rich in Dopamine thus correcting the imbalances, addressing the cause instead of medicating symptoms.  I have struggled with the effects of ADHD for more than 38 years and in the 12 months the changes in my MENU have profoundly impacted my life, health and overall behavior.

A year ago, I started eating a diet high in protein, low in fat and low in simple carbs and sugars, the results have been remarkable.  My cholesterol went down 105 points, my energy has gone up and my ability to focus and remember important details has increased and I’m less irritable and have no caffeine crashes.  I also have lost almost 30 pounds in the process!

The verdict is in and the reality is what’s on your MENU can impact your child or your ADHD husband’s manners.

    Introducing The 7 Nutritional Golden Rules to Empower YOU to Divorce YOURSELF from A.D.H.D.

    Golden Rule 1: Drink Plenty of Water; emphasis on plenty! Drink water before every meal, drink water first thing in the morning and around 1 hour before bed . Eliminate all caffeine drinks from your diet as well as all soda sugary beverages; this includes juices! Drink Green tea instead and use an infuser cup to create flavored drinks using plain frozen fruit and herbal tea’s as well as elimination boosting drinks that contain lemon cucumber mint or try an aloe vera lemon with honey drink.

    Golden Rule 2: Amp up Your protein intake. In fact you want “clean pure protein” at every meal and each meal should consist of 25 to 30 percent protein. To help you reach this goal you can incorporate a breakfast smoothie with a quality protein powder; I happen to like Plant Head and get it from GNC as it seems to be a high quality product but not to expensive! I will discuss The Breakfast Smoothie in more detail as it is covered in Golden Rule 5 and is an essential part of The Divorce.

    Golden Rule 3: Get off Complex Carbs and Sugars in exchange for a Low Carb approach with some simple sugars like those found in Fruits and Vegetables. Don’t worry YOU can still have some snacks even chocolate only without sugar. The Paleo Mom has a great sugar free version of the almond joy sweetened with honey that’s truly decadent! The idea here is YOUR going to reduce YOUR carb intake below 45% of YOUR daily calorie intake and discuss with YOUR personal physician about what low carb levels are right for YOU; but remember this is an important part of the nutritional change so be sure to let YOUR Doc in on what YOUR goals are for going on a ketogenic type diet plan. Also remember that YOU are giving up sugar as well and this may need to be done in small steps as it is addictive and YOU will most likely experience some withdraws. Be encouraged as sugar was the hardest food for me to forgo but the benefits are well worth it and YOU will feel so good and YOUR mind will thank you in countless ways!     Golden Rule 4: Good Fats are YOUR friend so increase them in place of the Carbs and Bad Fats you normally would consume. One of the absolute best Good Fats is Coconut Oil; learn how to incorporate this fat into YOUR diet it is a powerful brain food! YOUR thinking; wont all that Fat be harmful to the body? My Cholesterol has gone down over 100 points on this nutritional plan (notice I didn’t say diet) and the reality is that fat isn’t was causes heart disease; the real culprit is Carbohydrates! Carbs cause inflammation and some refer to this condition as “wheat belly” and understanding the truth about Food can change YOUR life as well as transform YOUR behavior! I will discuss more Good Fats in my upcoming e-book that will be available soon for those of YOU who are interested in taking YOUR life back!

    Rule 5: The Breakfast Smoothie is a must to start out YOUR day. Most people eat more junk food at breakfast without even realizing it; the smoothie solves this problem and delivers a much needed protein boost that YOUR mind craves in order to produce electro chemical messengers necessary for healthy brain activity.

    Rule 6: Find out if YOU are lactose or glutton intolerant; as much as 60% of people who have A.D.H.D. symptoms actually have a food intolerance and don’t know it! Notice I said food Intolerance not food allergy; its important to understand the difference and once YOU identify an intolerance YOU need to eliminate that food from YOUR diet. For example I eat no dairy except for Greek Yogurt which is virtually lactose free.

    After 38 years of A.D.H.D. I am taking control of my life, health and physical well being; my cholesterol went down 105 points and I closing in on my 30 pound weight loss goal! Most of all I am completely A.D.H.D. symptom free and I love it!!

    Ok! I must confess the counselor side of me has surfaced in rule 7. This could possibly mean the difference between YOUR success and failure as YOU apply the 7 Golden Rules to YOUR life. The reality is that many people are not very successful on any diet let alone a nutritional strategy that requires YOU to give up sugar. I would like to point out here; this is not a diet per say and there is a version of the almond joy, I enjoy on occasion, that has no refined or processed sugar that satisfy even the meanest sweet tooth! There are other amazing snacks that are possible as well, but I want to provide YOU with a few thoughts here that will set YOU up for success not failure as YOU begin a lifestyle change that has unimaginable benefits just waiting for YOU to discover as YOU go along. I didn’t just wake up one day and say I think I’m going on this amazing eating plan that’s going to change my life and divorce my minds marriage from A.D.H.D. This is what I know about human behavior; YOU are many more times likely to succeed at this plan and get the results YOU long for if YOU tackle 1 battle at a time rather than attempting to wage a war on all fronts. In other words, choose one change to take on at a time. My first challenge was to stop drinking soda completely and then I gradually took myself off coffee. I now drink a variety of tea’s with no or very low caffeine green tea is actually very good for YOU! I discovered I am lactose intolerant so I started taking myself off dairy and what a difference that has made! I then began working on breakfast and did a lot of trial and error until I arrived at the breakfast smoothie with added protein powder; this is the easiest way to guarantee YOUR nutritional needs are being met and YOUR not falling prey to all that not good for YOU garbage in a breakfast disguise! Then I began adjusting my Carbs and replacing them with good healthy fats instead. The last thing to go for me was sugar and this was no ease task at first, but now that I have some terrific snack recipes I am sugar free except for simple sugars I get from some fruits. This was about a year long process and I wouldn’t take anything for my journey now because I am starting to reap all the benefits of The 7 Nutritional Golden Rules! If YOU will begin with a plan that takes on 1 Golden Rule per week or allows YOU to slowly take YOURSELF of sugar in stages YOU will find that YOU will be more successful; remember sugar is a drug! A resent study was released that confirmed it’s easier to stop using Cocaine than it is to stop eating Sugar! So realize that YOUR body is toxic and addicted to the most difficult drug there is to get off. Sugar not fat is responsible for all the inflammation and disease in the human body of most people in North America; this is a well established fact that not enough of us are talking about!

    I am living proof that YOU can be successful at overcoming A.D.H.D. with nutritional changes and the reality is that food is medicine! I am almost at the 30 pounds lost mark, my cholesterol has gone down 105 points and my long time nagging joint pains have subsided; as well as my allergies have all but gone away! Most important is that all my A.D.H.D. symptoms are completely gone and I love it!
